The idea is to identify where your competitors are being cited and mentioned by AI platforms, and you aren’t. You can use this information to create content to fill the gap in visibility.

Prompt Research

The Prompt Research Report is a module within the AI Visibility Toolkit to discover what people are asking AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Google AI Mode) in the form of “prompts” and then prioritise which of those you or your brand could target.

Metrics

  • Related Topics AI Volume: Estimated monthly “AI search” activity across all prompts tied to a topic you analysed.
  • Intent Breakdown: The user-intent behind prompts (informational, transactional, commercial, task-based, etc).
  • Topic Difficulty: How hard it is to gain visibility for a given topic (based on competitor strength + number of opportunities
  • Prompts List: For each topic you get the actual prompts (the questions users ask) + the AI responses + brands mentioned + sources cited.
  • Brands & Source Domains: For each topic/prompts you see which brands are being mentioned and which domains are being cited by AI systems. Good for competitive intel + outreach.

Brand Performance

The Brand Performance module in Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit shows how AI systems perceive, describe, and reference your brand, beyond traditional search rankings. It analyzes:

  • Share of Voice (SOV): how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers compared to competitors.
  • Sentiment: Whether AI platforms portray your brand positively, neutrally, or negatively.
  • Narrative Drivers: The sources, citations, and topics shaping how AI systems talk about your brand.
  • Questions & Prompts: The specific AI queries where your brand is mentioned, revealing user intent and areas of interest.

On the main dashboard you’ll see where you stand: e.g., your SOV low but sentiment high, or high SOV but sentiment low. Use this to prioritise.

If your brand has high mentions but low sentiment → you need reputation work.

If your brand has low mentions but good sentiment → you need visibility or outreach.

Site Audit AI readiness

The Site Audit tool in Semrush now includes a dedicated “AI Search Health” widget that assesses how well your website is technically prepared for being crawled, understood, and cited by AI-driven platforms like (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or AI Overviews), rather than purely traditional search engine indexing.

Some of the major checks and metrics that this module brings are:

  • AI Search Health score: A summary metric reflecting your site’s overall readiness for AI search. Higher = better accessibility, structure, and crawlability for AI bots.
  • Blocked from AI Search widget: Identifies how many pages are currently blocked from being crawled by major AI-bots (example bots listed include OAI-SearchBot, Google AI, etc) and shows which bots are blocked.
  • AI-specific technical issues. The audit flags issues such as:
    • Content that’s too long or poorly structured for AI models.
    • Missing or misconfigured llms.txt files (which some AI bots may use to check crawlability or site policy) or equivalent indexing hints.
    • Missing/incorrect structured data (e.g., Schema.org markup), which helps AI systems interpret your content.
    • Internal linking, navigation, meta tags (robots no-index, meta robots,) or robots.txt entries that block AI-bots.
    • General technical accessibility: Are the pages crawlable and indexable by AI systems? Do they understand your content?
    • Checks on your website to see if there are technical issues that might block AI systems from crawling and citing your content (for example, missing LLMs.txt, blocking bots, etc).

Site Audit can check if your domain is blocking any of the following AI crawlers:

As an SEO coach, I use Semrush when I am auditing a client’s website. I love the clarity of the domain overview report.

It shows me the website’s current SEO standing – how much organic traffic the site gets from Google, the number of organic keywords the site ranks for, and its domain authority.

Now, with AI Search visibility built in, we can see the number of mentions and cited pages the website has in AI platforms.

Another favorite from Semrush is their keyword research tool. It’s easy to find new keyword opportunities and select the most effective target keywords for your content.

I believe Semrush’s keyword database is more extensive than Ahrefs right now.

Another feature I can’t do without is the On Page SEO checker and Site Audit tools. You can do website audits directly on the platform and it takes just a few simple steps to set it up. I have come to rely on these tools in my daily work for clients/students.

Overview of Semrush

Okay, let’s have a quick overview of what is Semrush and what you do with it.

Semrush is an online platform with about 50 different tools for boosting your online presence and getting more out of your online marketing campaigns.

In your Semrush account, you should see these 7 categories:

  • Search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Local SEO
  • Advertising
  • Social Media
  • Trends
  • Agency Solutions

For most small businesses, all of the categories above can help you with your digital marketing.

Though its strength undeniably lies in search engine optimization.

SEO

Semrush is THE all-in-one tool to help you optimize your website for search engines and achieve higher rankings and traffic on Google.

Under the SEO menu alone, there are 20 different reports and tools to help you with competitive research, keywords, on-page SEO, link building, and site auditing.

You can find local and national keywords, perform technical SEO audits, and track search engine results pages (SERP) positions.

It is a very powerful SEO tool to manage your website’s organic search strategy.

You can also create better content with Semrush. The platform helps you find keywords and topics that are more likely to help you reach your marketing goals.

Many entrepreneurs use Semrush for competitive analysis. The market research tools allow you to analyze the traffic of any website and review the strategies used by your competition. It is no wonder Semrush is a widely used SEO tool for small business owner and digital marketers!

Semrush can also help with your pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. You can use the platform to find the right keywords for your PPC ads, monitor ads from your competition, and optimize your spending.

Semrush plans also include social media tools. The social media features let you schedule content and analyze your posts for various social media platforms. However, there is still much more to explore.

SEO toolkit

The SEO toolkit includes over 20 tools for evaluating the SEO performance of your site and finding SEO opportunities. The available tools include competitive research, keyword research, site audits, link building, and more.

For SEO specialists, this toolkit is probably the one we use the most often.

After using the SEO tools, you can compile a report based on the information that you gather. Semrush includes powerful reporting tools. You can drag and drop data from their tools and export the report as a PDF file. If you are an agency with clients, this reporting feature can be quite useful.

Organic research

I absolutely love their organic research report which clearly shows how many keywords a website ranks for and the ranking progression over time.

The organic keyword trend shows us the distribution of keyword rankings in the top 3, top 10, top 20 – 100 positions on Google. So month on month, we can see if there have been any improvements or decreases in rankings.

Keyword research (New! AI-powered personalized ranking difficulty)

Semrush is possibly the best keyword research tool for SEO. This year, they’ve launched an AI-powered feature in the keyword overview tool.

You can research a keyword and enter your website domain to get personalized scores of the keyword’s ranking difficulty.

Semrush’s AI-powered keyword tool gives a personalized keyword difficulty and topical authority score based on the strength of your website.

In this case, I can see that for the keyword, “SEO made simple“, the personal keyword difficulty is 58 which is difficult, and my website’s topical authority is relevant enough to rank for it.

AI Overviews SERP feature (New!)

Semrush was one of the first SEO tools to release the AI Overview SERP feature. So users could audit their keyword rankings and check if their websites had AI Overview rankings.

Last year, I started to notice AI Overview rankings for my website and client sites I was monitoring. Semrush has the capability to visually see the AI Overview in SERPs which is great.

Organic Keywords

We can still use the main keyword research feature in Semrush to find new keyword ideas.

You can potentially receive up to two million keyword ideas using a single focus keyword. The keyword tools here also help you find long-tail keywords and related keywords, which can help optimize your website content.

You can search for new target keywords based on the following details:

  • Keyword difficulty
  • Competition level
  • Total monthly volume
  • Related keyword phrases
  • Questions

The keyword research tools can find broad matches, phrase matches, exact matches, and related phrases. You can add the results of your keyword research to the keyword manager.

Semrush relies on over 120 desktop databases and 18 different mobile databases to generate keyword ideas. That is quite extensive.

You can also review domain analytics. Domain analytics include a list of keywords that domains rank for and estimate traffic based on keyword rankings.

The plan that you choose determines how many keywords you can manage using the keyword research tool.

  • The Pro Plan allows you to track 500 keywords and view 10,000 results per report.
  • The Guru Plan allows you to track 1,500 keywords and view 30,000 results per report.
  • The Business Plan includes 5,000 keywords and 50,000 results.

Keyword strategy builder (New!)

Semrush AI-powered keyword strategy builder can cluster keywords into pillar and sub pages. Enter your seed keywords or build a keyword list, and the strategy builder groups your keywords into relevant clusters.

I think the value of Semrush’s new keyword strategy builder is that it takes your keyword list and turns it into an actionable content plan. Now, we know what pages to create to target these keywords,

Position rank tracking

Track your progress with Semrush. The platform includes daily rankings of your chosen keywords. You can track increases and decreases in visibility, traffic, and average search results position.

Another benefit? We can see SERP features in the position tracker too. So, you can if your site is ranking in AI Overviews, featured snippets, etc.

Using the rank-tracking tool allows you to track results over time to finetune your online marketing and SEO efforts. You can gauge the level of success. If you are not happy with the results, you can stop and look at what areas may need improvement.

Competitive research

Competitive research is a useful part of the SEO toolkit from Semrush. You can explore various details of your competitors’ online presence, such as:

  • Keyword rankings
  • Backlink profile
  • Advertising campaigns
  • Top-performing website content

Semrush can generate competitive research reports with the most important details for easier reference. You can quickly analyze your competition’s main strengths and weaknesses.

The site audit also reviews the speed and performance of your website. Use the tool to search for slow loading speeds, large HTML files, and average page load speeds.

Competitor analysis

Competitor analysis offers a snapshot of what your competitors are up to. You can quickly review your competition’s backlink profile or find gaps in their keyword rankings.
